Dr. Asher Wolke was a third-year surgical resident at St. Bonaventure Hospital. After Shaun Murphy becomes a surgical attending, Asher appeared to become his permanent resident while Danni and Danny seem to rotate between Shaun and Alex.
History[]
Early life[]
Asher was the son of a Hasidic Rabbi who eventually left his community to go to med school and became an atheist. He was also openly gay, having started to date men when he got away from his family.
Season 4[]
In "Fault," Asher gets his first patient, Carl and bonds with the man. However, Carl is discovered to have an aneurysm that Asher missed as did Shaun, Asher's mentor, when he refused to check on Carl for Asher. Carl subsequently dies in surgery, leaving Asher guilt-ridden; when Asher admits to not wanting to be alone, Shaun silently sits with him.
In "Lim," Asher continues to suffer from guilt over Carl's death and Claire has to take over a procedure from him due to his hands shaking badly. Finding a depressed Asher sitting in alone in the stairwell, Lim offers him advice based on her own experiences.
Later, Lim assigns Asher to perform an experimental procedure on a patient while being supervised by Shaun who has refused to train residents since Carl's death. When Asher starts to perform the procedure incorrectly, Shaun attempts to take over, but Lim stops him as Shaun's job is to teach Asher, not to take over for him. By visualizing the procedure in his head, Shaun is successfully able to guide Asher through it; the procedure ultimately proves to be a success in treating the patient's PTSD.
Season 5[]
In season 5, he starts a relationship with a male nurse. In the last episode of season 5 his parents come visit him with the news of his father’s diagnosis ( cancer with months to live).
Season 6[]
In the episode “the good boy”, Asher helps Danni perform an unauthorised surgery on her friend Vince who is on probation and was shot. Lim finds out about it . She is mad but helps. Danni is fired and Asher is put on probation.
Season 7[]
In the episode "Who At Peace", Asher is involved in an altercation with two antisemites who were vandalizing a synagogue. Afterwards, they attack him from behind and strike him over the head with a metal bar, killing him.
