"Dry Spell" is the twelfth episode of Season 5 of The Good Doctor. It is the eighty-eighth episode overall and aired on March 28, 2021.
Synopsis[]
Drs. Lim, Park and Wolke treat a woman with Valley fever and discover a secret she has been hiding from her fiancé. Meanwhile, Drs. Murphy, Allen and Andrews treat a 45-year-old virgin and help her make a big decision about her life.
Plot[]
Shaun walks into his bedroom, surprised to see Lea pleasing herself. In the ER, Dr. Lim treats a woman who fainted while getting off a plane. She tells Lim that she's not covered by insurance so Lim puts her in the hospital's uninsured program. A man is accompanying the woman and tells them that the woman is a photographer. He then reassures her.
Morgan is treating a female patient who has hemorrhoids.
Asher talks to Audrey about her patient. He likes the couples dynamic when Alex joins them. He tells Asher that it sounds like he wants a boyfriend and Asher does but he's finding it hard as no one checks the necessary boxes. Alex shows them the woman's x-ray and it shows she has lung cancer.
Lea finds Shaun during lunch and talks to him about catching her pleasing herself. Shaun informs her that he used to do the same but not since they got together because is satisfied by their sex. He wonders if Lea is not satisfied by their sex life and questions why she wouldn't want him to please her, instead of her doing it herself. Lea believes they are having a dry spell but she's confident it will blow over.
Shaun talks to Morgan's patient, Brenna, about her hemorrhoids. They will have to remove them immediately.
Alex talks to Mariel, the female patient with lung cancer. They want to biopsy the masses in her lungs but she worries the surgery wont' be covered on the uninsured program. The man accompanying her has someone on the phone to figure out her insurance. She tells him that her insurance didn't lapse but she lost it because she's undocumented.
Shaun returns to Brenna's room but Brenna is gone. They call a code green but can't find Brenna. While looking, Shaun tells Jordan that she hasn't had sex with Lea in 9 days. He has asked around for solutions and got solutions like bondage and a bubble bath. Jordan asks if they have tried to schedule their sex. Before Shaun can answer, they hear a noise coming from the woman's bathroom.
Mariel is taken for her biopsy and Isaac leaves to bring their bags to the apartment. He's annoyed that Mariel hasn't told him yet even though they are about to get married. She tried to get documented but was denied because she has a police record for driving high but Mariel wasn't at the time. She wasn't but they believed her to be because they found edibles in the car.
Jordan tries to talk Brenna out of the bathroom. Brenna tells Jordan that she's a 45 year old virgin so the reason she ran was because she plans to go on a date with someone. Brenna begins to cry because she feels ashamed about still being a virgin. Jordan asks about the date. Brenna is going out with Viktor who is an old friend. She fears that if she doesn't lost her virginity now then she will die a virgin.
Shaun eats with Glassman and tells him about his and Lea's sex life. He wants to know how Aaron had a good sex life with Debbie. Glassman tells the story about a Ferrari and how he couldn't get it to move because the pedals were too close, causing him to step on both the pedal and the break. He says that sex is like a car, there's a brake and accelerator. Before he can say more, Nurse Villanueva approaches and complains about the nursing schedule. She wants to talk to him about it and suggest solutions to fix it. Glassman tells her to talk to Andrews. When she leaves, he continues his talk with Shaun and tells him to give Lea chocolates and listen a lot.
Another nurse interrupts Glassman and tells him she'll send an email. When the nurse leaves Glassman asks Shaun if he keeps regular maintenance by talking and communicating with Lea. He wants Shaun to try and talk to Lea tonight and not watch the weather channel.
Alex is performing surgery on Mariel. He talks about her situation with Lim and Asher and tells Asher that it's clear he lacks experience with long term relationships. Mariel's cancer is not cancer; it's a fungus that gets released into her bloodstream on accident.
Jordan tries to talk Shaun into postponing the surgery on Brenna so she can have the date. Shaun doesn't want to because of how severe Brenna's hemorrhoids are. Morgan then talks about her first time (she lost her virginity at senior prom but it was a disaster). Jordan wants to bring Viktor to the hospital so they can be there if she ruptures but she also gets to lose her virginity. Shaun agrees because consensual sex is not against the rules.
Mariel is told about the fungus and the treatment necessary. Mariel asks about Isaac who hasn't returned to the hospital.
Glassman goes into Andrew's office and tells him that there's a supplier issue. Glassman want's the hospital to start a softball team as it would be good for morale. Andrew agrees and tells Glassman to make an appointment next time.
Asher is alone in the lounge area when Jerome finds him. He wants to bring Isaac back so Mariel can have emotional support. Asher sympathizes with Mariel while Jerome disagrees. Asher wants to give Isaac time and Jerome suggests someone else take care of Mariel's case if Asher won't have compassion.
Jordan is decorating Brenna's room with flowers taken from the chapel. Brenna admits she's scared to lose her virginity and Jordan sympathizes, telling her you feel vulnerable but it's special.
At his apartment, Shaun has set out candles for and turned the lights off. He gives her wine and a massage. Lea falls asleep during the massage, leaving Shaun to eat the chocolates he bought by himself.
Asher looks at the pictures Mariel had taken during her last trip. He offers to call Isaac again but Mariel tells him not to because she doesn't want someone with her who can't support her. Asher tells Mariel about Micah, a friend who was the first person to find out Asher was gay. Micah suggested they be openly gay and Asher told his family but his dad got mad. Micah, however, backed out about being openly gay and Asher never spoke to Micah again. Mariel's Oxygen begins to fall because her lung has collapsed.
Jerome interrupts Mariel's surgery to give Lim bad news about Mariel. The fungus is now affecting Mariel's kidneys but they have to clear it up before they can do surgery on the kidney.
Viktor walks into the hospital and is greeted by Jordan. He wants to buy Brenna a gift but Shaun gives Viktor chocolate as it will help to elevate their mood. Four pieces are already missing and Shaun tells Viktor to hurry so they can do the procedure. Viktor doesn't want to rush though. Viktor goes to Brenna's room and gives her the chocolate. Jordan closes the blinds and dims the lights. She then leaves with Shaun and stands watch by the door.
Glassman gives Andrews a jersey but Andrews doesn't intend to play. Glassman says he should play because the staff doesn't like Andrews since he isolates himself and was dating Salen.
Lea walks into her office and Shaun walks out from behind the door. He wants to have sex but he scares Lea who punches him. Shaun realizes that he shouldn't be spontaneous. Lea recommends a planned surprise next time which lines up with Jordan's recommendation. However, Lea doesn't want a sex schedule so Shaun gives another recommendation which was a sex swing.
Mariel is given treatment for the fungus but it's causing her to throw up. Isaac comes into the room and tells her he doesn't know what to trust. Mariel understands and hopes that Isaac will understand why she hid what she did.
Shaun returns to Brenna's room but the door is still closed. Brenna calls for help and Shaun walks in. Viktor is stuck but Shaun assures them they'll be fine.
Shaun is in the locker room when Lea walks in and rings their cowbell. She apologizes for brushing Shaun's efforts off. She tells him that she doesn't like the schedule because her parents had one and she doesn't want her sex life to match her parents'. Shaun doesn't understand why as Lea's parents are happy, he then leaves to remove Brenna's hemorrhoids.
Mariel is told she can have kidney surgery. Isaac says he won't freak out again and he wants to step up. The two hold hands.
Brenna wakes up from surgery and is told it was a success. Viktor gives her flowers from the gift shop. He wants to visit her again in a month when he's back in the city.
Jerome brings Asher food that he set aside while Asher was in the OR. Asher thanks him for the food and for pushing him to get Isaac to come back to the hospital. They're about to eat but Jerome asks Asher out on a date. Asher accepts the date.
The hospital is playing softball when Shaun and Lea leave because they are on a schedule. Villanueva compliments Andrews skills but she complains about the schedule. Andrews decides to listen to her recommendations.
At home, Shaun and Lea are relaxing in bed and Shaun tells Lea about Viktor. She laughs about Viktor getting stuck. The two then kiss.
