"Carrots"[4] is the fifth episode of Season 2 of The Good Doctor. It is the twenty-third episode overall, and aired on October 29, 2018.

Synopsis[]

When a patient suffering from anorexia can't gain the necessary weight needed to survive heart surgery, Claire suggests they perform an experimental surgery which Melendez strongly opposes. Shaun worries Glassman's refusal to walk the hospital floor will keep him from being discharged and tries to persuade him to ambulate. Meanwhile, Shaun and Lea change the terms of their current relationship.[3]

Plot[]

Following the news about the apartment Shaun got for himself and Lea, he is confronted by Lea who doesn't think they should move in together. She questions whether Shaun thinks about them becoming a couple, having concerns that they could be so if they move in together and she doesn't want one with him. Shaun says that feelings can change, but Lea just wants them to remain friends and fears that things could become awkward as she's so bad with relationships.

Dr. Lim is trying to find a surgery for Shaun and Park to do when Shaun comes across some fizzy urine, while a 42-year-old woman who is feeling faint - Louisa DeLeon - is brought in as her husband, Sam, states that she's anorexic. Shaun and Park see to their patient, Wade, who didn't know the state of his urine and is in as his right knee has been sore while he's been training for a race. When Shaun lists the issues the issues their patient could have, Park states that whatever he has is most likely anything they can treat.

Neil and Claire are looking over Louisa and tell her that one of her valves isn't closing which they need to repair. She states about her food issues and Sam states that it's been hard trying to help her when their son Graham comes in after having heard what had happened. Shaun also comes to see Dr. Glassman who is in need of walking a full lap of the hospital before he can be discharged, but he canceled his physical therapy. Glassman is unconcerned about himself, but Shaun fears of him being infected and tries to get him to walk (to no success).

A cystoscopy is being done on Wade and Shaun is told to look for any possible obstructions in him, only to realize that Wade possibly has a fistula. Claire reveals that Louisa's anorexia means that she won't be able to survive a required surgery and the team attempt to get her to gain weight so they can help her. They consider feeding her through a tube, but Louisa and Sam said that she once had one and it didn't work due to lack of control. She states that being pregnant with Graham was a miracle and would imagine him taking in the food she ate then, while agreeing to eat for him again.

Wade's fistula is believed to be caused by Crohn's disease and his gastric bypass is needed to be reversed, which he asks that his husband Spence isn't informed about when he arrives; his gastric bypass was caused by his obesity which Spence knows nothing about. When he states his attempts to cover it up after the surgery, Shaun suggests that they can do it all with a single incision. Unfortunately, Louisa's eating disorder is making her not take the enough of the nutrients she needs for the surgery. Graham berates her over how she's making herself sick and she agrees to an NG tube.

Park and Lim end up arguing over Wade keeping secrets from Spence, especially since they're both divorced which Shaun comments on. While Louisa is having the tube with Sam and Graham, Shaun reports to Dr. Blaize about Glassman whom she calls a proud man and states that he doesn't want to walk or he'll look weak in front of everyone. She then advises Shaun to be patient and supportive of him, while Wade is vomiting which Shaun suggests is because of bile and partial bowel obstruction and gets an NG tube.

Claire finds that Louisa isn't sleeping, being unable to get a voice out of her head telling her about the fat her IV bag has. She then starts coughing and pulls out her NG tube while crying over how she can't stand it. The next day, Shaun continues to try and convince Lea by promising that he won't think of them as boyfriend and girlfriend but fails to do so. Claire, Neil and Morgan attempt to talk about Louisa and Claire suggests a study she found concerning gaining weight without force-feeding or IV drips through brain surgery, only for Neil to reject it due to it's issues and orders for the valve surgery to be done.

Shaun considers getting Glassman a muffin to coerce him into walking when he encounters Debbie who offers a chocolate chip muffin. Spence also comes to see Park about Wade's surgery to suggest treatments for him which are based on not knowing the truth, to which Park tells him to talk to Wade. Shaun's idea to get Glassman to walk involves trying to get Glassman to go to and get the muffin Shaun got him, but he still keeps claiming that he doesn't want to walk and is annoyed at Shaun for manipulating him.

Sam goes to see Neil about how Louisa is asking for the brain surgery Claire suggested, even after being explained the issues with it. The next morning, Shaun still tries to convince Lea for them both to move in together, stating that he will be there for her and won't mind her issues and living with her will be good for him. However, Lea states that she's afraid of their friendship being at risk over living together and they'll still be friends while offering to apparently tell the manager that they don't want the apartment.

Claire is talking about the surgery she suggested, while getting Neil, Andrews and Aoki to agree to it as the patients who have it are less likely to sue the hospital. Park is soon called concerning another patient with Lim who chastises Park for telling Spence about Wade, who is demanding a transfer to another hospital as Park states that they shouldn't have had secrets. Louisa also states that she's tried every other solution to her problems but they've never worked when asking for the surgery and knows the risks.

Wade and Spence end up in an argument about Wade's weight issues while Shaun prepares Wade for his transfer, only to find that his bowel is bleeding. During Wade's surgery, Park still holds up his belief about how keeping secrets is dangerous. Shaun then comments on how Spence would've reacted similar to how Park did at how Wade got bypass surgery to get rid of his weight. Louisa is soon taken to surgery with Sam and Graham with her, while she upholds her love for Graham.

Having failed to get Glassman to walk concerning the muffin, he gets an idea while Louisa recovers and is fine. Wade's surgery is also successful which Park reports to Spence who is looking through photos of Wade before his bypass surgery. Park admits that he could gain weight again (to Spence's devastation), while Shaun brings Debbie to Glassman whom Debbie takes on the walk while revealing that she was a nurse. Claire soon reports to Neil that Louisa is doing fine, but Neil is not happy that Claire went behind his back and kicks her off the team in anger.

While Shaun comments that he thinks Debbie is better than him with Glassman, Park calls someone about a cheque and asks if he hadn't seen them with "Phil" who is long gone. Shaun also returns to his apartment when he finds Lea who has got an apartment with "a really cool roommate and a fireplace", referring to Shaun and the apartment they liked and wants to live with him, which they're both excited about.

Trivia[]

  • Reiko Aylesworth and Daniel Dae Kim both starred together on Hawaii Five-0.
  • When Lea talks about them not living together, Shaun states that Lea will have to get her own batteries, a reference to the episode Oliver and how they first met when Lea asked for batteries from Shaun.
  • There were several differences in this episode's Turkish version:
    • Claire and Neil treated the anorexic mother Louisa. But in the Turkish adaptation, it was Ali (Shaun's counterpart) and Ferman (Neil's counterpart).
    • When Neil firmly rejected Claire's approach to treat Louisa, she went behind his back to see that it was taken into account and pitched her idea to both the hospital board and the patient herself, who requested it. But even though Neil acknowledged Claire's excellent job, he still got mad at her for undermining his authority and removed her from his team. In the Turkish adaptation, however, while Ali did basically the same and both Ferman and the board's mixed responses stayed the same as well, the only punishment he ever gave to Ali was to exclude him from an upcoming surgery (choosing to solely work with Damla) rather than removing him from his team.
    • Claire was removed by Neil from his team for ignoring his own approach on how to treat Louisa, and later in Stories he reluctantly reinstated her per the demands of Andrews, with Claire covering for Neil by giving him a fake apology as to make sure he would avoid being reprimanded for refusing to do so or looking weak if he did. This was completely absent in the Turkish adaptation.
    • When Claire questioned Neil's decision to remove her from his team, she brought up Andrews having supported her, only for Neil to reveal that he had voted against her. In the Turkish adaptation, Beliz (Jessica's counterpart) confirmed to Ali that she was the one to vote against him.
    • Unlike the American adaptation, this episode was intertwined with the events of Friends and Family and Autopsy.
    • Due to the episode taking place along with Friends and Family, Ferman - aside from calling Ali out for undermining his authority - twisted the knife farther by bringing up Ali's deceased father Hikmet (Ethan's counterpart) and blamed Ali for all the trouble he's caused with his presence, even siding with Tanju (Andrews' counterpart) on the matter.
