"There are worse qualities in this world than trying to see the best in people. If you're a good person, every now and again, you're gonna feel like an idiot. Today you were wrong. And I am still grateful that I work with you."
—Neil to Claire trying to cheer her up after her good day turns into a bad one

"Fractured[1] is the eleventh episode of Season 3 of The Good Doctor. It is the forty-seventh episode overall, and aired on January 13, 2020.

Synopsis[]

Following his father's death, Shaun must deal with the effects his intimacy with Lea will have on his relationship with Carly. Meanwhile, the team operates on a patient who is refusing all anesthesia during surgery for fear of relapsing.

Plot[]

It's the morning after Shaun's mid-meltdown following Ethan's death. As it turns out, Shaun and Lea actually slept together the whole night in his hotel room as Lea was consoling him. Shaun later converses with Dr. Glassman, where Shaun realizes that things with Lea feel different than things with Carly, but he’s not sure what that means or what he wants.

At the hospital, two critical patients arrive; Shaun and Morgan are tasked with Kerry Gaston, a mother with a clearly broken leg. However, she refuses to accept pain killers claiming they’ve made her sick in the past. Much to Morgan's shock, Kerry claims the injury hurts less than childbirth. Meanwhile with quite the opposite situation, Claire and Dr. Park take on Luca Jones, a young man with a super bloated and tender stomach. At first, he refuses care, stating that he's unemployed, but Claire convinces him to take some meds and stay in the hospital long enough to ensure that they are working.

Shaun drops off samples for his and Morgan's patient where he runs into Carly, whom Shaun has been ghosting and ignoring her messages as he still doesn't know what to make of things. Carly is visibly frustrated but remains compassionate towards Shaun, reiterating that she understands his challenges with interpreting emotions. Shaun, however, is uncomfortable with their conversation and asks that she take his test samples before rushing away from the confrontation.

Claire is researching PTSD after having been given a leaflet on it from her therapist, Dr. Donna Malkin, which she tells Neil about. He agrees with the belief, while saying that he thinks doctors make terrible patients and that the best ones ask questions and keep an open mind. Claire soon finds out that Luca had thrown up due to the laxatives while trying to leave the hospital. Although he is reluctant with staying, Claire tells him that he has to when Park works out that he's doing drugs as he has the symptoms. Luca is reluctant about saying anything, though Claire convinces him that they won't hand him over to the police if he confesses the truth.

Shaun and Morgan are in the MRI room with Kerry, while Morgan sees that Shaun is considering breaking up with Carly to be with Lea. When Shaun tries to state that he has no such thoughts, Morgan advises that doing so is a mistake, pointing out how great Carly is and wants to be with him no matter what. She then calls Lea a flake, considering when she suddenly reappeared in his life, claimed a need to move out, only to move in, the road trip and how she only appears to want to just be friends. Shaun then finds that Kerry needs surgery to fix her leg, which he explains to her. Kerry is reluctant, since she's secretly an opioid addict.

Shaun, Morgan and Andrews try to figure out how to do the surgery without causing Kerry pain, but she needs drugs for this surgery so Andrews states that they should try a different one. He thinks of an external fixation, which is less painful but Shaun tries to state that it takes longer to heal and Kerry's at greater risk of infection and deformity. However, he all the same agrees while Park and Claire get Luca into an MRI. There, he confesses that he shouldn't have done the drugs but he had no other choice after he was let go from his job and it was just supposed to be a one-time thing as he needed money.

As Kerry and her family are informed of the surgery (though her husband Boyd is concerned that they can't use any drugs), Luca is found to have drug-filled balloons in him. Park states that they will need to remove the balloons, while at odds ends with Claire over whether to report Luca's drugs or not and Neil agrees with Park that they should. Kerry's surgery soon happens, though she is in pain throughout it. Luca is soon informed of how the authorities have been told and he attempts to leave, all the while Park and Claire attempt to convince him otherwise. When he doesn't listen, Claire tells him about how she grew up and she wants to help him.

Kerry is informed that she will be alright, though she will be in pain, as Boyd and their daughter Sharon come in. Claire and Park again butt heads over being sympathetic or abiding by the rules with Luca. Park even sees that Claire should be feeling the same as he does, only for Claire to reveal that she used to steal in order to survive while Breeze was gone. She once got caught in the act, only to be let go on a warning by a security guard. Neil then offers a solution that will help Luca.

Shaun and Carly eventually run into each other again, now alone in an elevator. Carly uses this as an opportunity to further press Shaun about what’s going on between them and also Lea. Shaun blurts out that it's different because he likes Carly, and that when he is around her, he wants to impress her. But he doesn't feel like he needs to impress Lea. At the same time, Luca is offered that they remove the drugs, send them to pathology and then release the details once Luca is gone without having him arrested, which he reluctantly agrees to and thanks Claire.

Shaun's dilemma isn't getting any easier since he doesn't know who's right for him. He mentally weighs out their pros and cons, though Lea's flaws outweigh her good points, when he asks Andrews how he knew Isabel was the one for him. Andrews refers to having a feeling of excitement in his stomach whenever he's been around her. He attempts to test this while with Lea and test his pulse, only for Morgan to call that Kerry's surgery is causing her leg to swell up while it appears she has compartment syndrome. She is informed that they'll have to do the original surgery or she'll face an amputation. However, she keeps refusing to be amputated despite Andrews offering help following the surgery. She's still got her issues, while Shaun and Morgan confront her about keeping her secrets.

As Shaun, Morgan and Andrews discuss whether to tell Boyd the truth, Luca's drugs are removed from him. Andrews soon sees Boyd and while reluctant to break her confidentiality, Kerry confesses it and her uncertainty at being able to relapse. Although she fears that he can't trust her, he states that he is and always will be completely behind her. However, she still has her fears and she is prepped for surgery. The next day, Shaun finds Carly in the cafeteria, where he states why he likes her. Although Carly states that she does love Shaun, that means absolutely nothing if he can't just talk to her. He then admits about how Lea was able to comfort and hold him. Carly is quite upset by this, it having taken a long time for him to be comfortable with her and asks for some space.

Shaun goes to see Dr. Glassman about how conflicted he is, while fearing that everyone will just leave him eventually. His parents already barely wanted him because of what he is and now he ends up fearing that he'll drive away everyone else including Carly, Lea and even Glassman who also gets emotional and tells him not to say that about himself. He then states about how proud he is of Shaun who isn't going to be rid of him. Shaun then hugs Glassman, only to break it when he has to go to surgery.

Kerry's surgery soon takes place, while she is restrained to help with her pain. Luca is OK and he thanks Claire for helping him. During Kerry's surgery, she grabs hold of Shaun's hand which he allows as it's distracting her. Claire soon sees Dr. Malkin, who asks about how Breeze berated Claire after figuring out that how Breeze was and her death are the reason why Claire has been going down her path of self-destruction. However, she is interrupted by a phone call and returns to the hospital; someone faked a seizure while another person broke into the storage locker in pathology. The only item taken was Luca's specimen and conveniently, he has also goes missing. After giving a fake name and fake address, there's no way to track him down.

As Morgan thinks about how strong Kerry is, Neil finds Claire who is devastated by the news but Neil offers some comfort. Claire refers to how Breeze saw that Claire would end up like her, while Neil states that, "there are worse qualities in this world than trying to see the best in people". He states that as she is a good person, she will sometimes feel like an idiot, though he is still grateful about working with her.

At the end of the day, Shaun finds Carly outside the hospital. She refers to when they first met, she thought his care for his patients was cute and was attracted to his honesty when he came to work in pathology. She tells him she wants to be with him but doesn't see how that’s possible while he's still living with Lea. Carly gets up to leave to give Shaun some time to think. He grabs her hand to stop her from leaving and tells her that she's right and agrees. He then proceeds to tell Carly that he loves her and the two of them embrace.
