"Hello" is the first episode of Season 2 of The Good Doctor. It is the nineteenth episode of the series overall, and aired on September 24, 2018.

Synopsis[]

Shaun's proposed treatment for a homeless patient puts him and Dr. Kalu in Dr. Andrews' crosshairs. Claire tries to overcome Dr. Melendez's reluctance to do a risky heart operation. Dr. Glassman faces a difficult decision about his health.[2]

Plot[]

Shaun, Claire, Morgan and Park are having review meetings with Dr. Andrews, the now president following Dr. Glassman's cancer diagnosis. Later on, Shaun and Jared are providing health care to homeless people when Jared asks Shaun what Andrews said about him. Andrews said that Shaun exceeded his expectations concerning Shaun's expertise and technical execution (which he tells Jared), but his communication skills are sorely lacking and he has to improve them if he wishes to stay at the hospital. However, Jared hasn't gone to his meeting since he saw no point considering he's leaving soon for Denver and what they're doing is a money trap.

Claire, Morgan and Park talk about how their own reviews went; he told Claire (who claims that it went well) that he thinks she needs to be more assertive and Morgan about her overbearing and egotistical attitude as opposed to being a team player. Neil soon approaches them concerning their patient; Melanie Arnott, whom Morgan states has pulmonary hypertension which needs to be treated with medication, but her heart is dealing with a lot of strain. Since there's nothing actually wrong with it, Neil plans for them to put in a new heart alongside her original one.

Shaun and Jared are helping the homeless people, while Jared also states that Shaun should work on his communication. Glassman is meeting his oncologist today, which surprises Jared since Shaun isn't with Glassman. Shaun states that he doesn't see why as he doesn't know about brain cancer much and can't give him emotional support. They soon see one of the homeless residents get into the mobile clinic while Glassman meets with his oncologist, Dr. Marina Blaize, who sees that Glassman thinks she's the best there is despite having previously used Marijuana. Glassman also demands that Blaize be as careful with him as possible, having been a surgeon, while she does her tests on him.

Shaun and Jared attempt to talk to the man, Harry, who is taking medication that he claims are his. When Shaun points out the medication is for Chlamydia, Harry claims that they're all the same and had to move next to "Mr. Googly-Eyes" whom Harry trusts. Shaun believes Harry has Schizophrenia, while Neil, Claire, Morgan and Park talk to Melanie and her son Elliot to assure them that Melanie will be fine. Unfortunately, Neil is annoyed to find that Andrews spoke to the press and Melanie about the surgery. He then accuses Andrews of creating a buzz for his new "vanity project" as president, a surgical centre Andrews is creating for excellence for whomever replaces him as chief of surgery.

Shaun and Jared are trying to treat Harry, who is having trouble getting the cup of alcohol he needs to swill and then spit out. He also informs them that his neck is stiff, which Jared believes is because of bacterial meningitis and is causing his paranoia. However, Shaun is afraid that it isn't bacterial meningitis and the wrong thought could get him fired. Jared responds by offering to take full responsibility if they're wrong. Morgan, Claire and Park are working with Melanie when Morgan comments that it's for the best that Jared isn't around since it's best that Claire isn't working with him on his last day. Claire responds with that she and Jared are no longer together, but Morgan thinks otherwise.

Melanie is found to have an aneurysm and the group attempt to figure out how to help her, but they ultimately think that they can't help her and Neil goes to inform Andrews. Claire suggests that they do Morgan's idea to resect the dilated tissue, but instead do so with the entire abnormal segment. Morgan thinks that a version of it could work by using a Teflon graft. Shaun and Jared are working on Harry, all the while Jared still tries to convince Shaun to be there for Glassman as his friend (to no success). Unfortunately, Andrews finds out about this, accuses Jared of trying to prove himself and threatens to make his life at Denver difficult if Jared is wrong.

Glassman is waiting for his test results, all the while having drinks of water and attempts to throw the cups into the bin (though he is unsuccessful). Meanwhile, Neil is angry that he and the others worked to try the surgery and yet they can't do it when Morgan, Claire and Park present their idea. However, Neil states that it can't be done as there's only a 20% chance that it will work, all the while Morgan claims that Claire came up with it. Jared also admits that he just probably wanted to prove Andrews wrong and fears that his self-indulgent gesture might've wasted hospital resources, while Shaun attempts to comfort Jared with the fact that he can still fulfil his potential elsewhere and believes that he will be happy.

Jared opts to unload the mobile clinic by himself, all the while annoyed when Shaun wants to help him but is disregarding Glassman whom Jared sees is facing death alone. He also sees that Shaun knows this and is separating himself from Glassman to make it easier for him, though it's not easier on Glassman. Aoki soon meets with Andrews who is slightly annoyed about how Neil refused the surgery as Neil always tries to find a way to work around the problem. Aoki tells Andrews to be like Glassman who always knew as president how to be a manipulator, having done so when he got Shaun hired.

Shaun goes to see Glassman, deciding to read a book while with him and tears out a page to try and get it into the bin while seeing Glassman fail. When he considers the trajectory, he remembers when Harry had a hard time trying to take hold of the cup and realizes he has a brain tumor. He tells Jared that they can change Harry back to how he was before if they remove the tumor. Although Jared still sees that Andrews will follow through with his threat concerning Denver, Shaun recruits his help to get Harry to have an MRI to confirm the truth. Andrews also sees that Neil hasn't canceled Melanie's surgery, seeing that things won't work out if he does the surgery; he'll either fail which will be hard on him or succeed which will be a win for Andrews, who asks Neil if he's surgeon enough to do it.

Shaun and Jared attempt to look for Harry, though Shaun suffers a temporary sensory overload while Neil agrees to do the surgery and addresses this to Melanie and Elliot. Shaun and Jared soon find that "Mr. Googly-Eyes" is a graffiti picture and Harry is in a tent near it. Harry's paranoia takes over again when Jared tries to talk to him, while Shaun realizes that "Harry's" actual name is Edward Austin Thomas, compares their respective neurological conditions (Shaun's autism and Edward's tumor) and tells Harry that they can help with his condition.

The surgery on Melanie is underway while observed by Andrews and Aoki. While Jared and Shaun find that Edward has a wife and daughter, Andrews furiously accuses Jared of bringing in Edward so as to annoy him. When he goes to make the call to Denver, Jared reveals that it was Shaun's idea and got Edward to come in while stating that he's proud that Shaun stands by what he does. Shaun also points out Edward's brain tumor and Andrews orders for him to be taken to an OR. The surgery on Melanie is almost over, but they're having difficulty and Neil orders for a new aorta built from Teflon. Edward's surgery is also finished, with Lim stating that they need to find out if it's worked.

Melanie's donor heart is placed inside her and the surgery is a success. Claire asserts herself as doing the closing since the surgery was apparently her idea. Andrews soon holds a press conference about the surgery and to take the hospital to the forefront of the medical professional. Edward's family comes to see him, with his wife commenting on his behavior being a result of him not being given the right medication. Shaun states that it wasn't her fault, while Edward reunites with his family. Jared also reaffirms what he told Andrews about Shaun and the two say goodbye.

Shaun considers Jared being right about being there for Glassman during his cancer treatment, which he tells Glassman who agrees. Although Claire is distraught about Jared leaving, they too also say goodbye as he leaves. Shaun also returns to his apartment when he receives a surprise; Lea is waiting for him. She asks him if he's going to say hello, and he does.
