I don’t want to stop being the person I am with her. Lea makes me more. But I don’t make her more. If I did, then Lea would want to be my girlfriend."
- —Shaun to Vera on why he doesn’t want to move on from Lea
"Hurt" is the nineteenth episode of Season 3 of The Good Doctor. It is the fifty-fifth episode overall, and aired on March 23, 2020. It is the first part of a two-hour season finale.
Synopsis[]
In the first episode of the two-part season finale, the city of San Jose is rocked by a massive earthquake that puts the staff of St. Bonaventure Hospital on high alert as they race to assess the damage and account for the safety of their colleagues and friends. Meanwhile, Dr. Neil Melendez and Dr. Aaron Glassman are attending a charity event when their lives are threatened by the earthquake.[2]
Plot[]
Neil, Dr. Glassman and Lea are at a cancer fundraiser at a local brewery owned by Marta, one of Neil’s former patients, and her wife Noreen. Suddenly, Noreen is giving them the tour when the ground started shaking badly. The brewery immediately starts falling apart. Brewing tanks fall around Lea trapping her there and to make matters worse, the floorboards underneath her collapse. Simultaneously, the ceiling breaks, and ends up falling on Neil. When he comes to, he finds Glassman with a dislocated shoulder. They and Noreen seem to be fine, but Lea is nowhere to be found.
At the hospital, Dr. Lim arranges for the hospital to take in the injured persons and to lead a HURT team of Claire, Shaun and Park. Neil finds Marta who is trapped under rubble, while Glassman is ordered to return to the hospital as they don't have many surgeons. As Neil, Shaun, Claire and Park get to work, Shaun is informed about Lea while Claire checks over Neil who attempts to state that he's fine. After he agrees to be checked over when she finds bruising on his chest, Shaun realizes that Marta doesn't just have a fracture, but something is pressing on her spinal cord and moving her could cause paralysis as he goes to find Lea.
Andrews is leading everything at the hospital when Morgan comes out, having had the surgery on her hands to remove her joint linings 48 hours ago. Andrews doesn't want her getting involved, considering her injuries and seeing her as untrustworthy for keeping her rheumatoid arthritis secret, but she still looks concerned at all that's happening. Lim tries to get Shaun to allow the rescue team to find Lea, but he hears someone else trapped that Park finds. Shaun is right that Marta could end up paralysed, so Claire considers a plan to remove one of Marta's screws in her spine following a tumor Neil had removed from her. However, Noreen is against having them do so.
While looking for Lea, Shaun hears her voice and soon goes straight through the floorboards without waiting for the rescue team and crawls through the dirt. He soon encounters a vision he sees of Steve as Park finds Casey, a young man also trapped under rubble. As Glassman arrives to help, Morgan also offers to by leading the nurses to treat the patients. Meanwhile, Park is checking over Casey whom he knows is underage (despite Casey trying to state otherwise). Park nonetheless knows that Casey's parents need to be contacted, but his mother is gone and he claims his father already has low opinions of him.
Morgan knows that she will be rude to the nurses while working for her and so orders them to call her a "bitch" before they get started, so they do. While Shaun has to brush off a vision of Steve claiming saving Lea isn't worth it, Claire and Neil get to work on Marta when Noreen tries to beg that they don't. She fears that they could kill her and even tries to convince Marta, who is dead set on having the surgery. Instead of Lea, Shaun finds a woman named Vera who is impaled on the shoulder and leg. Neil and Claire work on Marta and have Noreen help them.
Morgan oversees the work from the nurses over the patients, including the ones from the brewery, as Lim tries to understand Casey's injuries before they can remove the beam he's trapped under. Shaun contacts her about him and Vera, for which Lim promises to send a firefighter and orders Shaun to keep his channel open. During Marta's surgery, she suffers a bleed and Neil finds that they can't continue the surgery until she's had a transfusion. However, Claire considers another way while Park bonds with Casey, telling stories of doing reckless actions when he was young. Lim finds that Casey’s spinal cord had been severed and there is no femoral pulse. The beam pinning him down is cross-clamping his aorta and if they lift it, he would immediately bleed out.
Morgan thinks that a patient she and Nurse Petringa are overseeing, Tamara Krantz, is simply asthmatic and has to be discharged, only for Petringa to report that Tamara has back pains which have been worsening and believes that the woman is pregnant as her symptoms match. While Morgan gets annoyed at how Nurse Hawks is inept at sewing sutures on a man, she refuses to believe Petringa's suggestion and orders that the woman is given medication for her asthma and her bed cleared while Petringa calls her out for her attitude. As Shaun works on Vera, she tells him that her ex-boyfriend is on the board of the charity and she was looking to try and get him back (though he doesn't want to). Shaun's sympathetic as he's dealing with the same with Lea when he suddenly stabs Vera with an instrument and removes her shoulder impalement.
Fortunately, Claire finds an ingenious way to keep pumping Marta's blood back to her. As Lea is found and rescued, Park checks over Casey whom Park questions of his father's feelings about him. He's never said anything of the sort to Casey, but Park's attempts at comfort are brushed off when Casey just sees that neither his father or Park know him. Claire’s little invention allows Neil to successfully do the operation. As Lim reports that Casey's father will arrive soon, Park tries to fight for a way to help Casey whom Park hasn't informed of the truth. Lim takes note of how Casey's about Kellan's age, which Park admits but still stands by what he's saying.
Marta's surgery is soon done, while Petringa is proven right about Tamara; she has an ectopic pregnancy and needs surgery immediately before her fallopian tubes rupture. Vera tries to get Shaun to promise with her that they both move on if they survive, but Shaun is reluctant to do so; he is a good doctor which he owes to how he knew that he would be able to be so, but Lea has helped make him so much more than that. He doesn't want to stop being that person, all the while Lea has secretly got the other end of the walkie talkie and starts crying about what she means to him.
Morgan tries to find an available surgeon to help with Tamara's pregnancy, but the situation means that none are available. As Park and Lim soon get to work on Casey, Morgan decides to do the surgery herself and removes the bandages from her hands. Meanwhile, Marta will be fine, but Neil throws up and passes out. Suddenly, an aftershock follows and the pipes near Shaun and Vera burst. Shaun reports to Lim on this latest predicament and begs them to hurry, as their sub-basement spot is starting to fill with water.
