"I don't want to talk to reporters. So If I talked to reporters, it wouldn't be honest to who I really am… I considered all the arguments. I want to be known as a good doctor. Not a good autistic doctor."
—Shaun to Dr. Glassman on why he doesn't want to talk to reporters

"Influence"[1] is the fourteenth episode of Season 3 of The Good Doctor. It is the fiftieth episode overall, and aired on February 10, 2020.

Synopsis[]

After Dr. Shaun Murphy treats a patient who is a social influencer, he deals with unwanted attention. Meanwhile, the team treats a woman who is in abdominal distress after an at-home fecal transplant; and Dr. Carly Lever's efforts to separate Shaun from Lea are challenged.[2]

Plot[]

Shaun wakes Carly up early as he would like to have sex. Although she tells him that it is too early, Shaun says he has calculated that they have enough time for sex and to still get ready to be on work on time. However, they are still late for work. Shaun sees to his patient, Kayley, who has a sore throat, a pain like an ice cream headache and nobody can figure out what is wrong with her. She takes an interest to Shaun and takes a picture of him.

Park and Claire immediately work on Ann Stewart, a mother who has severe abdominal pains and a fever. Carly reports that Kayley's results are negative, while she and Shaun get to work following Shaun accidentally making them late. Carly offers to discuss their sex life during lunch, but he claims that he doesn't have time for lunch. It turns out he actually has lunch plans with Lea, which he didn't want to tell Carly. Shaun wants to understand Kayley by trying to get an ice cream headache like her, while Lea reveals that she has quit her job which she saw that she needed to do after Shaun asked her to leave their apartment.

Ann has had an ultrasound, which showed her colon is distended. Neil asks Ann if there is any history of Crohn's disease. She says no, the only thing she has had lately is a few UTI's. They have to keep her on antibiotics and in the hospital. The woman is a single mother and her family lives out of town, while Claire offers to get a social worker to take of her daughter Marla for her. Meanwhile, Shaun is consulting with Andrews and Morgan over Kayley. He tries to suggest 37 more tests to rule out what the issue is, but Andrews denies this, saying it's a waste of money if it turns out to be only acid reflux. He tells them to give her Dilantin for the pain and send her home.

Claire is with Marla who claims that she made Ann sick because she "drawnk" Marla's poop. Morgan and Shaun also go to see Kayley and tell her that they can't test her farther, which upsets Kayley hearing this and has a stroke Shaun has to save her from. Ann states that she just used Marla's feces to make a home fecal transfer, which she believed was safe. After seeing the video showing it, Park mocks how Ann could've done something as stupid as that though Claire sees that it has been shown to be safe (albeit while done in a hospital) as Neil orders that Ann has surgery and Marla's feces tested.

Shaun is pleased when he is able to save Kayley, which he and Carly celebrate outside. Some girls walk up to Shaun and start taking pictures of him. It turns out that Kayley is an influencer and those are her followers. Shaun and Morgan go to see Karley, telling her that there are two ways they can do the operation; they go in through her mouth though they can't see where they're going, or create an incision in her neck which could leave her with scars. Unfortunately, Shaun is unnerved by what Kayley has done concerning him, despite what Kayley tries to tell him and he leaves.

After Claire soon delivers stool samples from Marla for testing, Ann's surgery happens when Claire and Park are at opposite ends concerning getting medical advice online as Carly walks in on it; she thinks Marla's fecal sample might be mislabeled from a 70-year-old, so it looks like Marla's at risk for serious cardiac problems. As Morgan sees Neil and Claire running together, Lim tells Glassman that the posts about Shaun have gone viral. She suggests it will be good for the hospital, but Andrews and Neil are against it since Shaun's privacy was violated, it feels exploitative and they can't control what Shaun might say, while Glassman says that he will speak to Shaun.

While discussing what to do about Kayley's surgery, Morgan asks to lead. She's allowed, though Andrews just sees that she's hoping for some social media attention from Kayley. Marla is soon put into an MRI as Ann is woken up by Park and Neil. They tell her that Marla has narrowing of the left artery to her heart, a genetic condition and requires immediate surgery. Shaun sees Glassman and tells him that he doesn't want to be on social media. Glassman says he knows Shaun has trouble with social interactions, but also sees that stories do matter because they can be inspirational to people. This just unnerves Shaun who claims to have no time between his job and sex, while noting Glassman's issues with the clinic's technology. Shaun suggests that Glassman hires Lea for her help, which Glassman agrees to consider if Shaun considers the social media attention.

Kayley asks that the first surgery be done, while apologizing to Shaun for upsetting him and that she is grateful for him saving her and her career. She then talks about her online social life, which Shaun doesn't understand as she's willingly given up her privacy. Kayley sees that she has nothing to hide and states that they should all just be who they are, while Shaun points out that she is no-one as other people have made decisions for her. Ann also tries to explain the surgery to Marla, who starts panicking, then she passes out and hits the floor from a heart attack.

Glassman interviews Lea, though he admits that he has no interest in hiring her. However, Lea shows that he knows Glassman's issues and he has a change of heart. Marla is in surgery, though Park and Claire are still at odds ends while working on her. Shaun has lunch with Carly, who agrees about Shaun possibly being objectified. However, she also agrees that Shaun could inspire people as he did with Andie whom Carly had informed of Shaun's autism. Ultimately, she tells him to just do what he thinks is right when he informs her of intents to ask Lea for advice. He also informs Carly of his lunch with Lea the day before and her possible job at the hospital, to Carly's dismay.

Carly is upset about how she thinks Shaun is a liar, tone-deaf and insensitive, only for Morgan to tell her otherwise about him, points out she is just jealous of Lea and to deal with it. Kayley's surgery is also underway, with Morgan as lead. Although Kayley is briefly in danger due to Morgan's arthritic pain, Morgan and Shaun are able to help her. It appears Kayley will be OK, but Morgan is called into question about if she was at fault, only for Shaun to point out that they are equally responsible because they saw Morgan and didn't stop her. They're also uncertain about whether to report it, but Andrews ultimately tries to get Shaun to not tell Kayley the whole truth.

Claire and Park report to Ann that Marla will need medication for the rest of her life, but will all the same be alright. Kayley is also recovering and thanks the doctors for helping her, though Glassman knows about what Morgan's arthritis almost did. After Shaun has spoken to Lea, Carly compliments her as a good friend and knows how unfair it would be on Shaun to cut Lea out of his life. She also admits to having been jealous, something which Shaun says they will work out together. He then says that Lea tried to get him to share his story, seeing that not doing so was selfish, but he likes Carly's advice better. As Lim goes to see Neil about dealing with an anonymous favoritism complaint has been filed against him regarding Claire, Shaun goes to see Glassman and stands by not talking to any reporters. After having considered all the arguments, he just wants to be known as a good doctor, not a good autistic one.

Trivia[]

  • One of Andrews' arguments against having themselves promoted by Shaun's social media is they couldn't control what he would say, including possibly mentioning when Andrews got demoted (in Trampoline) or accidentally screwing up (possibly the complaint Nurse Hawks made against him in 45-Degree Angle).
  • Lea stated that Glassman thinks she's a flake. Morgan previously called her that (despite Shaun's statements) in Fractured. Lea also told Glassman that he's been to where she worked, referring to when he and Shaun visited in Aftermath.
  • When Shaun asked Carly if she would like to join him for lunch, she questioned if "lunch" was supposed to mean something else. This is a reference to how he previously did so in Sex and Death and "lunch" meant sex.
  • Carly refers to how she felt about Shaun and Lea being together in Wyoming from Friends and Family. This is mostly a reference to when she found out about Shaun and Lea sleeping together which he informed her about in Fractured, but there was also a deleted scene in the former episode where Shaun called Carly about being in Wyoming and stated that he had Lea with him which Carly appeared to feel uneasy about.
  • This marks the 50th appearances of Shaun, Melendez and Claire.
