Dr. Jackson Han is the former Chief of Surgery at St. Bonaventure Hospital after Andrews was forced to give up the job when he was promoted to President.

History

Season 2

In "Risk and Reward," Han is hired as the new Chief of Surgery and helps take on the case of a baby with severe birth defects. Han immediately clashes with Dr. Shaun Murphy and rubs many of his new staff the right way with his distrust towards Shaun, especially when Shaun tells the baby's mother that her anti-depressants may have caused her condition. After Shaun's diagnostic skills save the baby at the last minute, Han is impressed and decides to transfer Shaun to pathology against his wishes so that Shaun can continue helping patients, but won't have to interact with them.

In "Believe," many of Shaun's friends attempt to get Han to change his mind without success. Han is disappointed when he discovers Shaun in a patient's room against his orders, but Shaun makes a case for the patient being misdiagnosed with an inoperable and aggressive brain tumor instead of a parasite. Han agrees to test Shaun's theory which proves to be correct. Han publicly gives Shaun credit as the pathologist that saved the girl's life, but refuses to transfer him back to surgery. Though impressed that Shaun advocates for himself, Han uses Shaun's ability to see the true diagnosis as proof that Shaun belongs in pathology.

In "Breakdown," Han manages to get Shaun, Lim, and Melendez out of trouble with the medical review board due to their actions regarding the events of the quarantine. He takes on the complicated case of a man with a 200-pound tumor that the hospital is attempting to remove. Han refuses to consider involving Shaun in the surgery, leading to an argument with Doctor Melendez when Melendez desires to bring Shaun in to help deal with a complication that is preventing the team from completing the surgery. In the end, Han reaches a compromise where Shaun is brought in to consult only and Shaun provides a solution to the problem that allows the surgery to be completed successfully. In the aftermath, Shaun confronts Han and forcefully demands his job back, leading to an emotional breakdown. When Shaun refuses to relent, Han fires him.

In "Trampoline," Andrews fights with Han about Shaun's firing. Andrews realizes that Han knew someone who was autistic, but all Han will tell him is that the person died. Though Andrews has second thoughts about hiring Han, Han points out the amount of money Andrews paid for him and states that Andrews will make himself look bad before the board if he fires Han. Later, the board, including Glassman, meet to discuss Shaun's firing and Han refuses to relent, even when Glassman points out that Shaun inspired Claire to figure out what was wrong with the patient for herself, making her a better doctor. Han refuses to relent and tells the board that to rehire Shaun, they must fire him, confident that they will refuse. To everyone's shock, Andrews chooses to use his power as President of the hospital to fire Han rather than accept his way of doing things despite the damage it might do to Andrews' own career. Han is fired and replaced by Doctor Audrey Lim as Chief of Surgery while Shaun is rehired.
