Miles Browne is the father of Claire Browne and ex-husband of Breeze Browne. He left his family when Claire was young.
History[]
Season 4[]
Miles makes his first appearance in "Spilled Milk" where he is seen knocking on Claire Brown's front door. Initially, Miles is treated with kindness as Claire assumes him to be stranger but is aggressively asked to leave when he reveals he is Claire's father. Miles tries to explain himself to Claire but suffers from what Claire believes is a stroke after she asks him to say "don't cry over spilled milk" but he can't.
At the hospital, Miles is treated by Jordan Allen, Alex Park, and Claire. Jordan greets him with kindness and even compliments his looks by saying "I see where Claire gets her good looks" but Claire is shown to be annoyed by the sudden situation she has found herself in. When asked about his stroke like symptoms, Miles claims they happen when he has a migraine and his migraines happen when he is stressed. He then repeats "don't cry over spilled milk" to prove he is fine before asking Claire if they can go somewhere quiet to talk. He suggests a place where they can get coffee and dessert, then recalls how Claire used to love Rocky Road ice cream and he asks if that is still her favorite. However, his efforts are met with coldness as Claire tells him they have to run scans and tests. Accompanied by Jordan and Claire, Miles is brought to the MRI to get a scan. He addresses Claire, telling her she was right and he didn't have a migraine; he has terminal cancer.
Jordan, Alex, and Audrey Lim discuss Miles' problem while Claire stands in the back. They believe they can help him and ask Claire for her opinion. Claire says the decision is up the patient and they should bring the ideas up to him. Offscreen, Miles has refused surgery and he doesn't want to try chemo again. Jordan informs Claire about Miles' decision; however their conversation is cut short when Jordan is paged about Miles because his liver has started to bleed.
Jordan talks to Miles and informs him of the dangers if he is left untreated. She asks him to reconsider the surgery but Miles informs her that he is not afraid of dying. He then asks her why Claire is not in the room with them and why Claire is not the one telling him everything. He gets no response and both Jordan and Audrey look at him sadly. Because of this, Miles realizes that it might be time for him to go home.
Audrey talks to Claire about Miles, saying that if he leaves he will die before trying to sympathize with Claire. Claire informs Audrey about Miles and his departure from her life. He was a good dad who did everything right until he suddenly quit and seemingly vanished.
Miles is packing up his stuff when Claire knocks on his hospital door. She says she is here because Audrey suggested she come and talk to him. Miles tells Claire that he knows he can't make up for what he did and tells her about Breeze Brown. They were high school sweethearts who thought they could take over the world together. Before graduation Breeze got pregnant and Miles gave up a scholarship to Howard because it doesn't cover family housing. He wanted to be there for his family. This angers Claire who tells him that he gave up on the thing he left his scholarship for and says he should've taken the scholarship. Miles says he tried; he and Breeze gave marriage a go but Breeze's mental illness was too much so he left. He states that Breeze made it hard for Miles to see Claire, which only angers Claire even more. He is told to not blame his actions on her. Miles says he's not blaming Breeze and he was immature. Claire says Breeze was at least around, even if she was drunk, sick, and out of her mind. Claire waited for Miles to return and even though she loved him, he still left.
He claims to have never stopped loving Claire and has though about her every single day since his departure. Miles shows Claire a picture of them that he keeps in his wallet. Claire says she doesn't care because thinking about her didn't do anything for her and that Miles should've fought for her or come back earlier. Miles says he stayed away because of his own guilt. Claire says he should get the surgery even if she's not in his life. If he does not get the surgery then he is still a coward. She then leaves his room, leaving Miles to cry by himself.
Miles is shown on an operating table, having agreed to the surgery after his talk with Claire. Alex, Jordan, and Audrey are all present but Claire is nowhere to be seen, not even in the viewing gallery. Rather, Claire is in Miles' hospital room where she's looking at the picture Miles carries around with him. After the surgery, Audrey tells Claire that Miles is stable but he has a condition that can be passed onto offspring.
Claire waits for Miles to wake up. While he is unconscious, she says she felt fear when he went into the operating room. Miles then wakes up and Claire tells him to get some rest. She says that when he is better, he can take her to get some Rocky Road ice cream and tells him that it's still her favorite. He reaches out and Claire holds his hand. Miles tells Claire that he loves her. Although Claire doesn't say it back, she sheds some tears and nods.
In "Forgive or Forget" Miles is seen helping Claire clean up the kitchen after they had dinner. Claire thanks him for cooking and gifting her a new skillet, as well as compliments the chicken he cooked. Miles hypes of cast iron pans as he believes they are great to cook on. Claire asks if Miles wants to watch a movie and Miles suggests they talk instead. He says they talk about their jobs, news, weather and never about the past. Claire disagrees saying they talked in the hospital but Miles believes they barely talked. He wants to know if Claire has forgiven him yet. Claire doesn't give an answer and admits she'd rather watch a move, much to Miles disappointment, and if he wants to join then he can, if not he can leave. Miles agrees to watch a movie.
Miles and Claire are on a morning run when Claire suggests they talk, much to Miles delight. Claire talks about the last time she saw Miles (it was her birthday and she screamed at him) and how for years she thought if she said sorry Miles would return home. Miles says Claire had nothing to do with him leaving and she asks how he could just disappear. He says Breeze was yelling at him one night, telling him he was worthless and only good for money. He decided that if that's all he's good for then that is all Breeze will get so he sent a check every month and never spoke to Breeze again. Claire says they never got money which confuses Miles as he sent money until Claire finished college. He claims he sent enough for clothes, food, and rent for Claire and that Breeze must've stolen the money "from my child" which Claire counters by saying "the child you abandoned." Miles claims it's not his fault that Breeze stole the money but Claire says it's his fault that she grew up without a father. He tries to apologize but Claire says he's not sorry and he's only back because it's easy to take care of her now that she doesn't need a father. Their conversation ends with Claire telling him to not come to her house, not to call, and to leave her alone.
Sometime later, Miles answers his front door and Claire is standing in the hall. She tells him that he was a horrible father and what he did can't be undone but she should forgive him as he deserves it. She needs it as well because she needs him. Claire then expresses her desire to keep spending time together and for them to keep talking. Miles agrees and asks if they can restart everything with a hug. Claire agrees and the two embrace, causing Miles to start crying.
