"Point Three Percent" is the fifth episode of Season 1 of The Good Doctor. The episode aired on October 23, 2017.

While in the exam area of St. Bonaventure Hospital, Dr. Shaun Murphy encounters a young patient who looks eerily similar to his deceased brother, Steve. After discovering his parents have hidden his diagnosis from him, Shaun struggles to understand why he doesn’t deserve to hear the truth about his own health. Meanwhile, the team can’t figure out what keeps triggering their patients’ increasingly severe allergic reactions and races to find the cause before the next one kills another patient.[2]

Shaun Murphy arrives on time for work. Claire Browne and Jared Kalu have a patient who has bad abdominal pain. They think it's pancreatitis but Neil Melendez disagrees. Shaun helps Evan, a patient who looks just like his brother, with his broken arm. Aaron Glassman asks Shaun if working with the boy is making him freak out. Shaun says no because Steve, his brother, is dead. Evan says he broke his arm because he tripped but Shaun gets him a CT scan and finds that he has a brain tumor behind his inner ear. He tells the parents but they already know that Evan has bone cancer. They tell Shaun not to tell Evan about his diagnosis.

Shaun has lunch with Glassman. He asks why Evan's parents are keeping the diagnosis from him. Dr. Glassman says that it's not his decision but the parents. Shaun goes to Claire and asks her to lie for him. She tells Evan that he needs pins in his arm. Later, Evan asks Shaun why he brought Claire to talk to him. Shaun says because she's good at talking to people. Evan says Shaun's lying and that he needs to learn how to lie because it's a good social skill. Shaun tells Evan that he has cancer. Evan says that he already knows.

Evan had googled his symptoms and the results had been bone cancer. Evan says that it's okay he isn't afraid to die. Kalu and Claire's patient has an allergic reaction while in surgery. Melendez tells them to look for cysts. Claire tells Kalu that the cysts are filled with tapeworms. Kalu recruits Dr. Glassman to help with the removal of the cysts. Shaun looks through medical files trying to prove that Evan doesn't have cancer. He suddenly finds something that proves it.

He goes to talk to Melendez. He tells him that it might not be cancer. But they need a bone marrow aspiration to confirm. He says that the past ones could have been false positives. Melendez says that that is unlikely. Shaun goes to talk to Glassman about it. He asks him how to get a bone aspiration without anyone knowing. Glassman says that he has to lie and not tell anyone that he did it. Evan asks why he needs the bone marrow aspiration. Shaun says that he might not have cancer. Evan says okay to do it but then his parents walk in. They yell at Shaun and tell him to leave. As Shaun is leaving, Evan coughs up blood.

Shaun asks to help assist with the surgery but Melendez tells him that he's too close to the case. Shaun watches the surgery from the gallery. Dr. Glassman tells him that he needs to learn how to lie and that false hope is cruel. Kalu talks to his patient's son and tells him that he needs to talk to his dad before he has brain surgery. The guy tells his Dad that he didn't run away because he was embarrassed but that he felt he wouldn't be able to fill his shoes. Claire finds liaisons on Evan's ribs. Shaun waits for the results of the surgery in the waiting room with Evan's parents. Melendez comes out and tells them that his cancer has reached his chest cavity.

Dr. Glassman performs the brain surgery and gets the cysts out of their patient's brain and body. Evan wakes up and his parents tell him that he's going to be fine. He tells them that he knows about the cancer and that it's okay. Kalu's patient and his son finally bond over the loss of their wife/mother. Evan thanks Shaun for trying. Shaun asks him for a favor and asks if he could read him something. He pulls out "To Kill a Mockingbird" and starts reading. Shaun thanks him and gives him the book to keep.
