― Salen Morrison to Dr. Lim after being blamed for the death of a child |
Salen Morrison is a confident, stubborn, intelligent and nosy woman, who saved San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital by buying it and became its boss. She brought a lot of changes to the hospital in order to increase income, which made the personnel feel quite uneasy. While seemingly acting for the good of the hospital at first, she eventually proved to be a Machiavellian woman with little regard for the well-being of patients who does not tolerate anything or anyone going against her, not hesitating to fire several of St. Bonaventure's employees to maintain her grip on power.
History[]
Season 5[]
Salen first appears in "New Beginnings" as a patient with ADHD. She is revealed to already have a diagnosis later on the episode, and to use concealing make-up on her fingers to cover up the fact that they look very pale because of her illness. At the end of the episode, she reveals to Dr. Lim that she and her company, Ethicure, bought the hospital and made it a profiting one.
In "Piece of Cake", she brings many new changes to the hospital, such as fitness bracelets for the staff, new soap, new scrubs and surveys about the hospital and the docts working at St. Bonaventure's. Some of the staff, such as Dr. Andrews and Dr. Reznick, seem to like these changes, while others, such as Dr. Murphy and Dr. Glassman, aren't too confident about them. During her period of supervision of the hospital, Salen interferes in medical decisions, discharges patients too early, shuts down a clinic for patients in need and keeps very little substances in stock in the pharmacy. Halfway through her journey in St. Bon's, she asks Dr. Andrews on a date and later starts dating him, making him her puppet.
In "Measure of Intelligence", Salen is confronted by Dr. Murphy about the many changes she has implemented since coming on at St. Bonaventure, in which she accepts that Dr. Murphy has different requirements than others and allows him to use his old scrubs. She also declares that she will have maintenance revert the changes she has made in the staff locker room.
In "Rationality", she removes Dr. Glassman from his post as president, makes advert with Dr. Murphy's face on them, using his autism to attract more customers. One of the patients attracted by this billboard, a girl named Holly, is revealed to have a father who believes to know what's going on with his daughter, and Salen decides to let him interfere in Holly's medical decisions.
In "Crazytown", Salen reveals to have collected reviews about the surgical staff, and later shares them with the personnel. This causes Dr. Park, Dr. Reznick, Lea and Dr. Murphy to feel insecure. The survey results shows that Dr. Rendón has been very effective in his treatment of the hospital clients, which makes Salen feel very keen about his employment on the hospital. However, a patient in the hospital causes Dr. Lim to break up with him, which ends up with him resigning from his job and never coming back to St. Bonaventure.
In "One Heart", Salen negotiates with Dr. Reznick in order for the latter to run her own clinic. They share a few interactions along the episode about a patient and about morale, and Salen is shown to care more about saving funds and not getting sued than to make a patient happy and do what's right.
In "Expired", Salen's attempts to save money end up with expired medications, which causes a prematurely delivered baby to die. Salen chooses to go on with the hospital as if nothing had happened and ensures to Dr. Lim that it won't happen again and that the pharmacist, Dr. Fremes, has already resigned. However, it turns out that Salen fired him offering him a big sum of money to keep his mouth shut.
In "Rebellion", Dr. Lim plots against Salen in order to get her kicked out of St. Bonaventure's, but she discovers her plans before Dr. Lim can achieve anything.
In "Yippee Ki-Yay", Dr. Andrews takes a very risky case of a VIP patient in order to please Salen.
In "Cheat Day", Salen finds out that Dr. Park, Dr. Murphy, Dr. Glassman, Lea, Dr. Wolke and Dr. Lim. She enters Dr. Lim's house without permission and then fires Dr. Lim, Dr. Glassman and Lea. In the end, Dr. Andrews chooses his friends and takes a stand for them, which forces Salen to back off in the interview, to sell the hospital to her boyfriend and to break up with him. After this, she's never seen again on the show.
