Plot[]
Claire gets a knock at her door and when she answers it, the man says he is Miles Brown, her father. She asks what he is doing there, and in turn he says that he owes her a lot of answers. She tells him to go home, and he in turn apologizes. Unfortunately, before he can say anything else, he has a stroke in front of her.
Meanwhile at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital a patient named Maya Flores arrives at the ER. She has a bleed and Shaun says she has to go into surgery right away. In surgery, the bleed is not clotting. Marcus is in with Shaun, and he says she almost died from a collision with an elbow, but they think that there has to be something else going on.
Jordan goes in to see Miles, with Alex and Claire. He asks Claire if they can go for a coffee. She tells him they need to do some tests on him first. Before Miles goes in for an MRI, he tells Claire that he has terminal cancer. Jordan and Audrey look at his x-ray and try to come up with a way that they can help him.
Maya is out of surgery and she admits that her right leg has been bothering her for months. Shaun tells her they will have to do x-rays on her hip and femur to rule out a fracture.
Shaun is with Lea, since he is trying to make her comfortable by bringing her prenatal vitamins. However, she tells him to be the dad, not the doctor.
Jordan goes to see Claire and tells her that her father refuses surgery because chemo almost took him out and he doesn’t want to try again. Jordan tells her that he came back when a lot of dads don’t. Jordan says forgiveness isn’t for the one you forgive; it is for you. Jordan gets a page that Miles’ liver is bleeding.
Shaun tells Aaron and Asher that he and Lea are in love and that they are going to have a baby. Though he admits that they should be really happy right now, instead he feels like he is living with a stranger who doesn’t want him to breathe on them. Then there is his patient, whom he can’t promise that he can save her leg.
Later, Audrey tells Claire that if they discharge Miles he is going to die. Thus, she is asking her to do what he didn’t do for her. She says she grieved and buried her father a long time ago and she is not interested in grieving him all over again. Audrey tells her that if she turns her back on him she is going to regret it.
Shaun then tells Maya the plan to do a femur replacement, but the safest route is to amputate. She says her dance career would be over. Alex interjects by saying that she would be alive though. Maya says she wants the leg first and if she is going to die tomorrow, there is something she wants to do first. So she dances with her partner.
Meanwhile, Morgan tells Alex he should come over tonight. He tells her that she is emotionally stunted and that anything that resembles intimacy freaks her and she starts throwing blows. Which is why he tells her that if hooking up will head in that direction, then it is better to go back to barely friends and no benefits.
Asher goes in to see Maya and tells her she is risking her life. He tells her about a girl that he was supposed to marry. Her name was Rachel and he was in love with her. But then, he fell in love with the boy down the street and all of a sudden, his world lit up, Rachel wasn’t enough, he was lying to himself and to her. He tells her that she needs to tell Leo about how she feels about him. Shein turn says they share everything and that they are partners in every sense of the word, except one and she doesn’t want things to change between them.
Eventually, Shaun gets home to Lea and then he dances with her. She tells him that the swaying is making her feel sick, so she goes to sit on the couch and read a book instead. Shaun admits that he feels disconnected from her and the baby, and realizes that he is making his girlfriend mad at him a lot recently, which leaves him feeling very alone. Lea then tells him that he is so selfish, that she is growing his baby, reading books, and taking tests for them. She goes into the bedroom and closes the door behind her.
Claire goes to see Miles, he tells her that she deserves better than him and he knows that. He tells her that he and her mother were young and naïve and stupid. He goes on to say that he tried for a while, but couldn’t handle her mother’s mental illness. Claire in turn says that she waited for him, that she loved him but he just left. He in turn says he thought of her every single day, which leads to Claire crying, as she says that he could have fought for her and that he could have come back for her. Miles admits to being a coward for running away from his own guilt. She in turn says that whether she is in his life or not, he should get the surgery, because if not, he is still a coward.
Lea later tells Shaun that she is scared too and that she doesn’t’ want to go through this alone. She doesn’t like that he calls the baby a fetus because she wants him to feel connected to said baby. She then tells Shaun to put his head on her belly and talk to the baby. Shaun in turn tells the baby about his patient, the dancer. She asks him if he feels better and he says no because the baby is too young to understand. Which leads Lea to tell him that he shouldn’t go to the ultrasound, because he may say something to make her more upset.
Maya is in surgery when she starts rejecting the platelets. Asher goes to see Leo, where he tells her that she is in love with him and that is the only reason she is having the surgery because she thinks that if she can’t dance with him, she will lose him. He says he loves her as well, and Asher asks him how much.
Audrey tells Claire that Miles is stable, but that his cancer is genetic, so she needs to get a genetic test. Claire leaves the room.
Morgan gives Alex a patient file, she is being decent and he says it is delightful.
Shaun is with Claire and two talk about dads. He tells her that maybe he tried to connect with her and it just didn’t work. He asks her if she wants to know what kind of man her father is.
Later, Maya is awake after surgery, but she sees her leg has been amputated. Leo says he wasn’t willing to risk losing her, that he loves her and she is not going to lose him.
Asher goes to see Maya, Leo is not there and she doesn’t know where he is. She tells him that Leo loves her, but she doesn’t think it’s enough. As long as he was around, she didn’t have room for anyone else, so she asked him to go.
Claire is in her father’s room, where she tells him that she has been mad at him for so long that she couldn’t feel any other emotion but anger. She thought she outgrew it, but when he went into surgery, she didn’t feel anger, she felt fear. Miles wakes up and looks over at Claire, she tells him to get some rest. She says that when he feels better he can take her for a rocky road, since it is still her favorite. He reaches out for her hand, and she takes it. He tells her that he loves her and she cries.
Meanwhile, Lea is in her ultrasound, as Shaun walks in. Lea tells Shaun to sit there and be the dad and do nothing. They listen to the heartbeat as she tells him they are having a baby. Shaun takes her hand and squeezes it.
