"Two-Ply (or Not Two-Ply)"[4] is the sixth episode of Season 2 of The Good Doctor. It is the twenty-fourth episode overall, and aired on November 5, 2018.
Synopsis[]
Morgan and Shaun’s indecision on how to treat a young violinist who visits the ER with an infected finger could affect her future in more ways than one. Meanwhile, Lim, Claire and Park can't figure out if their young patient is really ill or looking for attention.[3]
Plot[]
Shaun and Lea have now become roommates, though Shaun disagrees on how Lea has not bought two-ply toilet paper or placed it on the right way. At the hospital, Neil, Shaun and Morgan are with their patient - violinist Jas Kohli, who has an infected finger from a manicure gone wrong she had a couple of days ago.
While Dr. Park tries to get Claire to apologize to Neil after he kicked her off the team for going behind his back (especially since he could be Chief of Surgery), Dr. Lim brings in their patient; Riley Mulloy, a 13-year-old girl suffering a severe nose bleed while brought in with her father, Bruce. Morgan also relates her knowledge of bowstrings with Jas as she’s a former archer from high school. Shaun then finds that Jas has pain in her infected finger which he attributes to a flesh-eating bacteria being there and that her finger will need to be amputated.
While Riley is being treated, her mother Stella comes in and she and Bruce are taken elsewhere so Park can talk to them. Unfortunately, Morgan doesn’t believe that Shaun is right about Jas as cutting off her infected finger will destroy Jas’ career which she puts above the possibility that Jas could die if Shaun’s right. Bruce and Stella inform Park that Riley has had other issues, but every paediatrician they’ve taken her to never found anything. They believe she’s making it all up, trying to subconsciously get her family back together as Bruce and Stella are divorced.
Claire reports that Riley is alright when Park questions if she’s on drugs, to which she states that she’s been using Flonase because of her issues and also appeared to have caused her nose bleed. While Park advises her to stop, Bruce and Stella start fighting while Riley starts having breathing problems and begins coughing up blood. As she and Claire compare how they’ve both had tough lives, Claire states that she’s never let her past define her and Riley doesn’t have to let her’s do the same when she finds no trace of Riley bleeding.
Shaun calls Lea about how she forgot to put her coffee cup in the dishwasher before she left, but then hangs up to talk to Claire about how Morgan isn’t actually working on Jas because of their common ground. Claire states that he can’t know everything and that tests aren’t right at times, to which Shaun rushes off to the ladies restroom to look at the toilet paper; he sees that Claire has advised him about the right tests and sees that the toilet paper is hanging over (as it’s mostly done) as opposed to under (how Lea does it).
Dr. Glassman is being told how to use his walker by a nurse (to his annoyance) when he’s visited by Debbie who brings him food from the hospital. He offers to share with her, but she has other plans though she offers to have dinner with him the next day for a date. Meanwhile, Morgan is working on Jas when Shaun points out that Jas has a fever. He also tries to order a biopsy to test if Jas does have flesh-eating bacteria, only for Morgan to berate him for scaring Jas and accuses him of being obsessed with it. However, she agrees to testing Jas after Shaun points out that Jas’ temperature is increasing.
While testing Jas, Neil finds that Shaun was right and they go to save Jas’ hand. Claire and Park are getting Riley an MRI when the two end up at odds ends concerning if Riley is making this up or not. Claire then realizes that Park is a father, which he never said as he doesn’t believe in over-sharing while claiming that that’s what Claire does. While they continue bickering, they find that Riley’s scan is clean and Riley states that they should send her home.
Surgery on Jas is soon underway, with Morgan still focusing on saving Riley’s hand and making sure it will retain mobility. When Shaun returns home, he tries to address Lea’s habits. However, Lea has to leave for a late night session and gets annoyed when Shaun appears to be over-critiquing her and she snaps. She attempts to apologize, but he falls apart to her dismay. While Claire is helping a patient with a ruptured achilles, Bruce brings in Riley who has a fever and can’t breathe. She has an infection due to pneumonia caused by an underlying condition. Claire and Park can’t find anything, which Claire attributes to a tumor it appears Riley has. Unfortunately, Park still refuses to believe that Claire is right but he and Lim agree to it when Claire points out that they could be sending Riley home to die.
Glassman is also farther annoyed with his nurse and gets her to leave when Lea suddenly visits. When she tells him about how difficult Shaun is, she asks for advice on what to do. However, she gets annoyed when Glassman states that Shaun just has more quirks and can tend to annoy others more than most people and he forces her to sit so that he can talk to her. She states that she likes Shaun because of how much a good person he is, but realizes that she wants him to change despite having moved in with him and Glassman points out that Shaun doesn’t want her to change. He also states that she should move out now if she and Shaun aren’t a good fit.
Claire talks to Bruce and Stella about the surgery needed to find out if Riley does have a tumor. Although they’re reluctant since no other doctor has found this and Park agrees that it’s rather risky, Claire states that they can show how much they love Riley if they agree as parents. They do and also tell Riley about it. Unfortunately, Jas’ blood pressure is dropping and her heart rate is rising following her surgery. As they work to help her, the bacteria has spread and Morgan is horrified when they have to amputate Jas’ arm.
Jas’ amputation soon happens and Morgan volunteers to finish helping her. Riley’s surgery also takes place, but her heart rate is going up drastically and an open thoracotomy needs to be done on her. While Morgan is with Jas, Riley’s blood pressure increases but she’s stable. However, she’s having complications though it’s unknown what’s going on. They soon find that Riley has had a LEGO piece that she must’ve inhaled years ago and she was sick due to her body’s immune system attacking it. Bruce and Stella also make amends with Riley.
Glassman and Debbie soon have their date and they kiss, only for Glassman to suddenly fall due to not having his walker and turns down Debbie’s offer to help. Jas soon awakens and is devastated to find her arm gone, while angry with Morgan for not listening to Shaun. Park also congratulates on what Claire did, even though they’re still at odds ends. Debbie stays with Glassman, helping him out but he feels that they’re moving too fast and he can’t be in the situation they’re in. He then asks her to leave, though they’re both devastated.
Neil soon finds Morgan who is upset at what she did and all because she wouldn’t listen to Shaun who Morgan thought didn’t care about Jas. Neil states that he once knew a resident who was somewhat weird but smart. He got annoyed at how she was fantastic at surgeries, only to find that she wasn’t competitive with him like he was with her. He confesses to be talking about Lim and how great she is, while Claire meets the two in the elevator and is complimented by them both about her work on Riley. When Neil realizes that Lim has something to say about the issue with Claire, she invites him out for a beer.
As Shaun returns home, he tells Lea that he’s fine. She apologizes for her outburst and admits that she’s just stressed out by recent circumstances. Shaun takes this as Lea moving out, though she states that she isn’t and they’re still figuring each other out. While they address their issues and agree to work things out together.

Trivia[]
- There were three differences between the American and Turkish version of this episode:
- In the American adaptation, Shaun treats the violinist with Morgan. But in the Turkish adaptation, he is paired up with Nazli (Claire's counterpart).
- Jas' arm is amputated and her career is permanently destroyed as a consequence, with Morgan feeling remorse for not listening to Shaun before. However, in the Turkish version, Ferman (Neil's counterpart) presents Ali (Shaun's counterpart) and Nazli with the solution of a customised prosthetic arm, so the patient's dreams won't be in vain.
- Morgan doesn't take Shaun's warning seriously partly due to his autism. Nazli did not ignore Ali's warning because of the reason mentioned before.
