- "I don't think we should be together anymore. I can't be your girlfriend anymore… Last night at karaoke, when you and Lea were singing together, there was something between you two. You love her, not me… It's obvious… I saw what I saw, Shaun, and I am telling you, it doesn't matter what you say. It's true. And I think she loves you too. You should tell her how you feel."
- —Carly to Shaun on why she's breaking up with him.
"Unsaid"[1] is the fifteenth episode of Season 3 of The Good Doctor. It is the fifty-first episode overall, and aired on February 17, 2020.
Synopsis[]
Despite everyone else’s doubts, Shaun is hopeful that Carly is truly fine with his friendship with Lea. Meanwhile, the team treats a young boy—born without a fully formed trachea and unable to speak—who may be a good candidate for an experimental procedure.[3]
Plot[]
Shaun has made breakfast for Carly, who says it’s perfect. He’s trying to show her love and comfort to help her get over her insecurity over his friendship with Lea. He soon arrives at the hospital while late for a meeting with Claire, Park and Morgan as Carly wanted sex. Neil joins the meeting, apologizing to them about if he appeared to play favorites while referring to the favoritism complaint Dr. Lim received.
Claire, Park and Nurse Villanueva are working on Fran, a woman who was attacked by a dog and almost bled to death. Shaun, Morgan and Lim are working on Cory, a young boy whose upper trachea never developed in the womb, his upper airway is totally blocked and he has no larynx at all. The tube he needs to breathe keeps causing infections and recurring pneumonia. He communicates with his parents through signing as it’s helpful to him. Lim tells the parents that there is surgery which won’t help Cory speak, but will allow him to breathe on his own without the tube. His father is worried as it is experimental, though Cory wants to go ahead with it though if it gets rid of the tube in his neck.
Fran's surgery goes well, though Park tells her there she will have more. She says that she is a firefighter and needs her full strength, Claire tells her with physical therapy she will get pretty close. Morgan and Shaun are doing a test on Cory, where Morgan tells Shaun that verbal communication isn't enough in a relationship when he states that he isn't good with non-verbal communication. Park and Claire are together, when she asks whom he thinks complained to Lim. When he says he doesn’t know and the work that needs being done on Fran, Claire considers Morgan and how she expects them to trust her. Park claims that it was him, out of fear of her getting special treatment.
Shaun is at lunch when Lea sits down with him while annoyed at how Glassman is with technology. She promises to leave if Carly comes. Shaun says he thinks Carly is fine, but also states what Morgan claimed. Lea then states that she's sure Carly would say something if anything was wrong as Morgan tells Shaun that they've got their surgery on Cory to do. Fran is also in surgery, while she is revealed to have bite marks right to the bone. Claire wants to assist Neil, but he asks Park to. Claire is left frustrated as Park supposedly trying to help her is actually benefiting him, though Park states that complaining about it isn't helping.
Shaun, Lim and Morgan are working on Cory, but Morgan has a hard time operating and Lim tells Shaun to take over. Morgan starts making comments about when Lea had lunch with Shaun and was eating off his plate, which Morgan calls the oldest trick in the book and she was claiming territory. Neil is outside the hospital with Claire, whom he informs that they cannot continue running together and that he can’t socialize with residents outside of work anymore. Claire is flabbergasted, saying they are just friends and it's not fair. She tries to claim that they're just friends which Neil agrees with, but the rumors have started and he has no choice.
Cory is out of surgery and it is a success, with Cory even signing to his parents that it hurts but it is the best feeling he has ever had. However, Shaun gets frustrated with how Cory can only sign, even back at his apartment with Carly while having dinner (which he says is delicious). Carly tries to suggest a transplant, but Shaun states that Lim ruled it out years ago due to a risk in tissue rejection. Shaun also fears that if Cory doesn’t learn how to speak soon, he will never be able to and leaves the table to do some reading.
Morgan tries to do some practice sutures, but her hands are shaking terribly due to the arthritis (despite taking medication). While Shaun is at breakfast with Lea, he tells her what Morgan said about how she is trying to assert dominance over Carly. Lea says it is not true when all of a sudden, Shaun comes up with something for Cory and leaves the table. Park and Claire inform Fran that they were able to reattach her bicep muscle and tendon, but she finds that she can’t move her arm.
Shaun speaks to Lim and Morgan about an idea on how they can help Cory; they create a larynx with his costal cartilage and two of his ribs, though Morgan sees that it will just undo their work on Cory. Lim, however, likes it and they bring it to the parents, who are against it as they don’t want to take the risks. Lim backs up Shaun's statement that Cory won't be able to speak if they don't do anything now, while Shaun tells them that they are making a big mistake and that his limits will mean he won't be able to interact with others and leaves while devastated.
Claire, Park and Neil try to figure out how to help Fran, only for Park and Claire to get into an argument over what to do. Neil ultimately sides with Park to create a nerve conduit to guide the severed nerve ends together to heal, despite Claire's doubts. Neil also thinks that Claire is overreacting when Claire thinks he is being biased against her. Lea is in the elevator when the doors open and Carly gets in. It's an awkward moment, though Carly says she is fine with Shaun and Lea being friends; Shaun always tells the truth and he said that he is not interested in Lea.
Lim is annoyed that Neil told the residents they can come to him with any issues following the favoritism complaint as she sees that he's telling them to not talk to her, thus seeing that Neil disrespects Lim (even though he tries to state that he doesn't). Just about when Cory is going to get discharged, Shaun asks him if he is happy to be going home. He nods yes, though Morgan sees that he is otherwise. Cory tells his parents that Shaun was right; he does have a hard time at school making friends and doesn’t want people to think he is stupid anymore and his parents agree to the surgery.
Cory is back in surgery, going along with Shaun's plan to give him a voice. Cory’s blood pressure plummets, so the team works hard to save him and he stabilizes. That night, Carly and Shaun are out having drinks. They are very pleased about what the team did for Cory and look to see a couple that Shaun makes jokes at, only to realize that it's Lea and her current boyfriend. Carly asks Shaun if he could kiss in public and they try it. Fran's second surgery happens, with Park and Claire being competitive with helping Neil which he doesn't need.
Shaun, Carly, Lea and her boyfriend get up on stage and try their hand at karaoke. Shaun gets so excited, he grabs the mic and starts singing with Lea which Carly sees. The next day, Shaun tells Carly that is happy that she and Lea are friends. Fran has woken up from her second surgery, which worked and she definitely should get her strength back. Cory is also awake from surgery and is asked to try and make a sound. He does and everyone is thrilled. Cory thanks Shaun for pushing for the surgery, calling it is the best day of his life.
Neil is out having a drink when Claire sits down beside him. She says they can be friends without it being weird. He tells her to enjoy her dinner, gets up and leaves her. Morgan is getting changed in the locker room when Lim asks her what is going on, stating that she knows Morgan filed the complaint against Neil and realizes that she saw doing so could've protected her from getting fired. This is secretly because of Morgan's arthritis, though she doesn’t say. Neil also comes back into the restaurant and sits down beside Claire, he asks for two menus.
Carly sees Shaun coming out of the hospital. He offers to make her a special dinner, though Carly tells him that they shouldn’t be together anymore. It's not because of anything he did, but because of the previous night at karaoke; when he was singing with Lea, Carly saw something between them and she thinks he loves her. Shaun denies this, telling Carly that she is wrong. Carly says that maybe he believes that, but she saw what she saw. It’s true that he loves her, and she loves him too. Carly tells him to go to Lea and tell her how he feels.

Trivia[]
- This episode had some differences from the Turkish version, mainly on the case of the young patient unable to speak:
- Shaun worked with Lim and Morgan on Cory's case, while Ali (Shaun's counterpart) worked with Ferman (Neil's counterpart) and a new resident named Damla, a composite character of Morgan. While both of them are openly mean to Shaun and Ali due to their autism, however, the only difference is that while Morgan tolerates Shaun for his exceptional skills as a doctor, Damla shows no remorse for her behavior and blowing the whistle on him to Tanju.
- Shaun insisted that Cory be given the chance to speak so he could make friends, but his parents refuse to. Lim even told Shaun to stop. However, Ali became emotionally defensive about it and even ended up scaring Berke (Cory's counterpart), and Ferman furiously yelled at Ali to stop and ordered him to leave (which Lim didn't do). Tanju (Andrews' counterpart) was present to witness this, while Andrews himself didn't appear.
- Shaun's reasons to want Cory to speak are left ambiguous, while in the Turkish, Ali was made fun of by his classmates for being mute, making his motivation to give Berke a better life somewhat justified and relatable.
- As Cory was to be discharged, Shaun initially accepted defeat and asked Cory if he was happy to return home. But in the Turkish, Ali was stubborn and actually attempted to convince Berke again about the surgery after Nazli (Claire's counterpart) unintentionally gave him an idea to do so. Cory and Berke told their parents they wanted the surgery. Cory did so through Shaun's first attempt. But in the case of Ali, Berke only accepted the surgery after Ali assured him he wasn't alone and that he had Ali.
- Morgan was concerned about Cory not being that happy to return home and asked if there was something wrong. Damla didn't do this in the Turkish adaptation, instead apologizing to the parents on Ali's behalf for his previous outburst.
- Cory's parents reacted mildly appalled to Shaun trying to convince them about the surgery, while Berke's parents were mad at Ali for scaring him.
- The positions of Carly and Nazli to Shaun and Ali telling them about their intentions to make Cory and Berke speak. Carly made some suggestions but wasn’t involved, due to her working in Pathology, while Nazli was actively amongst those who advised Ali not to go against the wishes of Berke's parents, proclaiming that Berke was happy as he was and would be able to find people who loved him for who he was. Nazli was even disappointed, not only because Ali still went through with the plan, but also over the fact that he knew Tanju was going to fire him, but he still didn't care.
- At the time this case happened, Shaun and Ali were already dating Carly and Nazli respectively. But in the Turkish version, Tanju had found out about it and threatened to have Ali fired if he made a mistake while working at the hospital and handling an emotional relationship at the same time. Although in the end, Tanju chose not to fire Ali, realizing that it was his usual personality that drove him to act the way he did. This didn't happen in the American adaptation, because of Carly's work field (mentioned above) and Andrews didn't have an issue with Shaun and Carly dating, especially since he was no longer Chief of Surgery and Shaun had already earned his respect.
- Carly breaks up with Shaun due to his feelings for Lea. This didn't happen with Nazli, given that there is no Turkish counterpart of Lea.
- Due to there being no subplot of Claire and Neil's Turkish counterparts developing feelings for each other, especially taking into account Ferman is with Beliz (Jessica's counterpart), the conflict about a favoritism complaint against Ferman never happened. This also included the fact that Nazli and Acelya (Morgan's counterpart) are actually best friends instead of rivals.
- The favoritism complaint about Neil that Lim received from Influence is brought up.
- The song that Shaun, Carly, Lea and her current boyfriend sing is Super Bass by Nicki Minaj.
